Taylor has worked with the stars
Scott Taylor Salon's focus is 'fantastic looking hair'
Living and working among the Hollywood crowd is an experience hairstylist Scott Taylor will never
forget, but for him, being in Nashville is simply the tops.
"If you've lived where I've lived and done what I've done, when you come to a place like this, it's
very clear why I'm here. It's wonderful," Taylor said.
"Nashville has been ... so far greater and richer than anything I ever experienced in Los Angeles,"
he said, adding that the people here "have been so supportive" and "true and warm."
Taylor, a Los Angeles native, has been a hairstylist for more than 25 years.
After years of working with big-name clients in Hollywood and Los Angeles, he said he welcomed the
opportunity to work in a "real" environment when he opened the Scott Taylor Salon on Harding Road
near Belle Meade in 1996.
"Studio work, even doing hair (in Los Angeles) in a salon, there's a sense of surrealness. It's
not real," he said. "Coming here to this town has given me the ability to take off the rose-colored
glasses to really see and feel and experience what real life is all about. It has been incredible.
Just fantastic."
Taylor and his staff do hair and nails as well as color work, color corrective work and glamour
work.
Scott Taylor Salon does plenty of "trendy stuff," but regardless of the style clients are looking
for, "our focus is developing fantastic looking hair so that the individual always looks
fantastic," Taylor said.
Taylor gives credit for experiences to his mentors, famous stylists Paul Mitchell, Vidal Sassoon
and Jon Peters.
Taylor draws upon his experience on the West Coast, where he was a stylist for stars such as
Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Leeza Gibbons and Vicki Lawrence.
He was also a regular on national television in the 1990s, doing makeovers on shows such as
Vicki, Leeza, Mike & Matty and Crook & Chase.
Taylor said he has heard from other producers in the business that shows such as these spawned
the extreme makeover mania seen on TV today.
Locally, he has appeared on "Talk of the Town and had a two-year continual segment on
AM Nashville.
He said doing whatever was asked of him, which included making himself available at all hours
of the day and night and ready to fly anywhere, led to his being selected to head "The Hair"
for the Academy Awards from 1991 to 1993.
The 1991 show earned him an Emmy for Best Production.
He has also worked with the Academy Awards for the past three years.
WKRN Channel 2 called on Taylor for this year's Academy Awards to gain his insights into current
hairstyle trends, what's coming up and what it's like to be a part of the Academy Awards.
His work has also been seen on The Young and the Restless.
But, truth be told, working with "real" people is better than working with glamorous stars,
Taylor said.
He said the biggest reward in owning the salon is that he's able to create an atmosphere where
people feel as though they have a place. They can be comfortable and not have to worry about
unpleasant gossip.
"People can pretty much walk in and know they're going to walk out just thrilled to no end,"
he said. "You feel that people here care about you, they care about your needs, they love you.
"We recognize that truly, without them, we wouldn't have what we have. Without their support
and who they are, we wouldn't be where we are," he said. "The privilege to serve is a great
experience that some people don't get."
He welcomes input from clients and said people may even come in with pictures of what they want
done to their hair.
"It's all about them, it's not about us. The narcissistic mentality doesn't exist here."
By conversing with his clients, Taylor said he can determine what style works best for them in
a very short amount of time.
"No one can really believe that you can get all that information in just 30 seconds," Taylor
said. "But doing all those television shows, some of them were live on camera, and we had just
about that much time to size up the individuals that we were going to do and get them ready
for the show."
He said if he started over, he'd do nothing different.
"I never tire of this job. I never tire of what we do as far as elevating us to higher levels
of excellence. We don't ever feel like we're lax," he said.
Taylor said he is "continually looking for mature, progressive stylists to share with him in
the full experience of creating the hottest looks in Nashville for the provocative lady."
